Roach returns to West Indies squad for ODIs in India

The ODI matches against India will be played on February 6, 9 and 11 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Veteran pacer Kemar Roach and young all-rounder Nkrumah Bonner have been named in the West Indies ODI squad for the three-match series starting February 6 in India.

Roach, who has not played any List A cricket since his last ODI in 2019, has included him in his first team selection after taking over as chief selector alongside West Indies great Desmond Haynes.

Six extras have been added to the Kieron Pollard-led side, who lost to Ireland at home.

The ODI matches against India will be played on February 6, 9 and 11 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The T20Is will be played on February 16, 18 and 20 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and the Caribbean squad is expected to be announced on January 28.

Besides the experienced Roach, 22-year-old Bonner, a middle-order batsman whose last ODI was exactly a year ago, and an opener, Brandon King, have been recalled to the squad.

The 27-year-old King’s last one-day outing in the national colors was back in 2020.

Roach has played 92 ODIs so far in which he has 124 wickets.

Bonner made his ODI debut in Bangladesh a year ago and has played three matches so far, while King has appeared in four matches in this format.

“Kemar Roach is one of our premier fast bowlers and we believe we need bowlers to pick up early wickets, and Kemar, with an economy rate of five, is certainly good enough to play.

“Nkramah Bonner’s cricket has grown rapidly over the years and we believe he should be given the opportunity to play in the 50-over format,” Haynes said in a statement. The series will be part of the ICC. The ODI Super League and West Indies will have an opportunity to win points to be among the top seven teams leaving hosts India to gain automatic qualification for the 2023 World Cup.

“We want to compete for places. We want to reach a stage where we have many players fighting for positions. We want to widen the pool of players that we have to choose from.

“The team we have picked is a very good team and we are looking at this tour as part of our preparations for the 2023 World Cup in India,” Haynes said.
