  • South Africa Legends beat New Zealand by 9 wickets
  • It was a good comeback from South Africa which had earlier lost to Tendulkar’s India
  • Ross Taylor couldn’t make his debut in the Road Safety Series

Johan Botha turned back the clock in the form of a brilliant bowling performance from the veteran off-spinner to lead South Africa Legends to their first win of the second season of the Road Safety World Series. South Africa Legends beat New Zealand Legends by 9 wickets at Green Park, Kanpur in Match No. 4 of the much-awaited T20 league for former cricketers.

Botha produced a brilliant display of spin bowling as he dismissed New Zealand’s batsmen, including their captain Ross Taylor, who retired from international cricket in April 2022.

It was a poor performance with the bat of well-rounded New Zealand’s Ross Taylor winning the toss and deciding to bat in his first match of the season.

New Zealand were restricted to 99 for 8 in 20 overs, with Brownlee scoring 48. Wicketkeeper Gareth Hopkins was the only other batsman to reach double digits (18) as New Zealand’s batting card cut a sorry figure.

Johan Botha, who bowled in the Powerplay, dismissed Ross Taylor for just 4 runs in the 5th over. Neil Broome (1), Jacob Oram (6), and Craig McMillan (7) failed to go in the middle overs as South Africa dominated the entire ball.

Off-spinner Thandi Tshabala took three wickets as New Zealand fell behind on Monday.

Strong comeback from South Africa

In reply, South Africa Legends smashed a 36-ball 51 from Andrew Puttick to chase down 100 runs in just 13.3 overs to register their first win of the tournament.

It was a good comeback for Jonty Rhodes-led South Africa Legends after a 61-run loss to Sachin Tendulkar-led India Legends in the Road Safety Series opener.

England Legends will take on in-form Sri Lanka Legends in Tuesday’s match before India Legends take on West Indies on Wednesday, 14 September in the Road Safety World Series.

The Road Safety Series will be played till October 1, the final of which will be in Raipur.
