Former Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has been named as the new manager of Portugal’s national team, the country’s football federation (FPF) said on Monday.

Spain’s Martinez resigns as Belgium coach following his team World Exiting the cup group stage, he said he had made the decision to end his six-year stint some time ago even if he was crowned champions.

It ended a long spell in charge of the side that saw him take them to number one in the world rankings and third in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Martinez, 49, is replacing former Portugal coach Fernando Santos, who left his job following the World Cup quarter-final loss to Morocco.

Santos, who has been widely criticized for his tactics, became Portugal’s coach in 2014 and has led the country in 109 matches. They won the European Championship in 2016 and UEFA’s inaugural Nations League in 2018–19.
