Rod Sims, Emma Macdonald among keynote speakers to exchange views at DNPA Dialogue

New Delhi: Heads of India’s top news publishers along with think tanks and leaders of antitrust regulatory circles from Australia will converge on Friday, November 25, 2022 for the inaugural edition of DNPA Dialogues, the first of its kind. To be hosted by Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA).

Rod Sims, former chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and a prominent face of the country’s regulatory initiatives, will be among the speakers at the summit, which will feature eminent speakers and discuss topics covering collaboration between Big will do. Tech and the digital news media, the importance of antitrust measures around the world, and the future of the digital news ecosystem.

Sims was instrumental in introducing Australia’s News Media Bargaining Code, which made it easier for Australian news media to sign deals with tech platforms such as Google and Facebook. He led the ACCC from 2011–2022. He is now Professor at the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University and Chair of the Steering Committee of the Competition Research Policy Network at the Center for Economic Policy Research in London.

Emma MacDonald, Senior Policy Advisor at the Minderu Foundation, Peter Lewis, Director of the Australia Institute and James Mees, Senior Lecturer at Melbourne’s RMIT University will also participate in the conference which will be held in a webinar format.

McDonald was Senior Policy Adviser to Australia’s Ministry of Communications from 2019-2021. At Minderu, she negotiated with Google on behalf of 24 Australian news outlets. Lewis, a leading public policy campaigner, oversees the fortnightly Essential Report and is a regular columnist for Guardian Australia. Mees is writing a book titled Digital Platforms and the Press: Distribution, Deals and Dependencies.

The first DNPA Dialogue on Friday from 10 am to 12 noon will see leaders from India’s media industry exchange views with Australian dignitaries and discuss ways to build a better, fairer and fruitful partnership between tech giants like Google and Facebook. Will brainstorm on the methods of News publishers of the country.

The event promises to gain a lot for Indian stakeholders from various walks of life. Topical discussions can particularly benefit members of the legal community and law students, media circles as well as academia.

A pioneer on the publisher-platform relationship, the cross-continental conference is the brainchild of DNPA, a Delhi-based umbrella organization of the digital wings of India’s leading 17 news publishers. The independent advocacy body promotes equality and fairness in the way news organizations and Big Tech companies engage in the digital ecosystem.

Amar Ujala Managing Director Tanmay Maheshwari and Star News Group Managing Director Paul Thomas are among the prominent speakers of the conference, which also includes Pawan Agarwal, Deputy Managing Director, DB Corp; Anurag Batra, President and Managing Editor, Business World and e4m.

“This will be a unique exchange of ideas, which will contribute immensely in making India’s digital news landscape a level-playing field,” said Maheshwari, head of DNPA.
