Rohit Sharma said on Wednesday that he is happy to help train potential successors following his recent appointment as India’s cricket captain across formats Virat Kohli, The star batsman was named Test captain on Saturday – he was already the white-ball captain – but since he will turn 35 in April, pundits don’t expect his tenure to be long. India’s 28-year-old pacer Bumrah has been appointed as the vice-captain for the upcoming three-match T20 and two-Test series against Sri Lanka starting on Thursday.
29-year-old KL Rahul, who captained the ODI side in South Africa in January, was unavailable due to injury.
The 24-year-old Pant, a wicketkeeper-batsman who leads the Indian Premier League team Delhi Capitals, has also been picked as the captain of the future by pundits including batting great Sunil Gavaskar.
Rohit said, ‘Then we don’t want to put pressure on these people. “They are very important to us and at this point in time we want them to enjoy their game, come out freely and execute (their) skills.”

On Bumrah being promoted to the job of deputy in T20s and Tests, Rohit said the role would only add to his promise as a deadly fast bowler – with 113 Test wickets since the start of 2018.
Rohit said, “It doesn’t really matter much if it’s the batsman or the bowler as the vice-captain, it’s the mind that matters to that person. And I think Jasprit Bumrah has the game. Have a good mind.”
