Ropeway will take tourists from Dharamsala to McLeodganj in just 5 minutes

Dharamshala Skyway: This ropeway will connect the tourist places of Dharamsala and McLeodganj.

A long standing demand of tourists traveling between Dharamsala and McLeodganj in Himachal Pradesh has been fulfilled. Now, visitors can reach McLeodganj from Dharamsala in just five minutes instead of taking a 45-minute road trip. Dharamsala Skyway, an aerial ropeway project developed by the Tata Group to connect the two tourist destinations, is ready.

In an Instagram post, the Tata Group said the 1.8-km-long Dharamsala Skyway was set to “change travel” between Dharamsala and McLeodganj. “45 minute ride in just 5 minutes,” it added.

In less than an hour since it was shared, the post has garnered over 2,100 views.

Developed in a private-public partnership by TRIL Urban Transport Pvt Ltd, the ropeway can reportedly take 1,000 passengers per hour per direction, Traffic jams are common on the road between Dharamsala and McLeodganj during the peak tourist season. However, now that the ropeway is operational, it will reduce the distance by 9 km and save about 40 per cent travel time.

The ropeway was inaugurated by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on January 19, 2022.

Built at an estimated cost of about Rs 207 crore, Shri Thakur said that Dharamshala Skyway is two stations and 10 towers, and the technology employed was the mono cable detachable gondolas system, and has 18 gondolas (cabins). The top station is right opposite the Dalai Lama Temple in McLeodganj.

The cost of one-way journey for one person is fixed at Rs 300 and two-way charges at Rs 500 per person.
