Ross Taylor announces international retirement

New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor has announced that he will retire from international cricket following the conclusion of the upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh and six ODIs against Australia and Netherlands next year. Taylor made his debut in 2006 and retired as New Zealand’s most prolific batsman across all formats, scoring 18,074 runs in 445 matches – also the most by any man in his country.

The 37-year-old said it was an honor to represent New Zealand while thanking the fans for their support through his international journey.

“Today I am announcing my retirement from international cricket at the conclusion of the domestic summer, two more Tests against Bangladesh and six ODIs against Australia and the Netherlands. Thank you for the incredible support of 17 years. It’s an honor to represent my country #234,” Taylor tweeted.

Taylor, who is the first player in history to make 100 international appearances in each of the three formats, said the timing seemed right.

He said, “It has been an amazing journey and I feel incredibly lucky to have represented my country for as long as I have. Playing with and against some of the greatest players in the game and doing that is what I do. A good fortune for me. Many memories and friendships along the way. But all good things must come to an end and the timing seems right for me.”

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead thanked Taylor for his contribution to the team.

“Ross has always been a highly respected member of the team and we are grateful for his contribution to the Black Caps in an incredible career. His skill and flair as a batsman has been world class and has the potential to perform at such a high level for so long. His ability speaks volumes of his longevity and professionalism.Watching him win to help him win his maiden ICC World title in Southampton is a moment I will never forget and I am sure that It is the same for many fans.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson called Taylor a ‘world class player’.

“He’s a world-class player, our best with the bat for so long and it’s a pleasure to be involved in so many partnerships with him personally across all formats,” Williamson said. “We’ve shared some pretty good moments together – the recent World Test Championship final, which was obviously really special.”

Taylor has the most Test runs (7,584 runs), the most ODI runs (8,581), the most ODI centuries (21) and the most centuries (40) across all formats.
