RRB NTPC: Human Rights Commission demands action on police for crackdown on students

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday ordered appropriate action against last month’s police crackdown on students protesting changes in Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) exams. It asked the concerned authorities to take action on the complaint filed in the lobby report within eight weeks.

Allahabad High Court lawyer Gajendra Singh Yadav had filed a complaint with the NHRC. He sent the video and photos along with the complaint to the commission. This particular complaint pertains to police action against protesting students in Prayagraj, though demonstrations took place in different parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and other states.

“There was a peaceful agitation by the students regarding the Railway Entrance Exam and the UP Police took a harsh and unfair step against those students as well as other students. The police started beating (them) to beat them, dragging them, breaking their doors. Reportedly, the students were “butted” with the bottom of the guns. He was declared terrorist (ed) by the police.

Now the commission has sent a letter to the police administration asking about the action taken in the matter. The commission has asked the police to submit its report with details of action taken within eight weeks. A letter has also been sent by the Commission to the complainant advocate in this regard.

The students were protesting against the RRB and NTPC for irregularities in the recruitment process and conduct of the second CBT exam. An FIR was earlier registered against YouTuber and online teacher Khan Sir and six other coaching institutes for allegedly inciting violence. Protests intensified in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

In Prayagraj, the police administration was accused of misbehaving with the protesting students. This led to a clash between the protesters and the police. Earlier, a video of Uttar Pradesh policemen had gone viral in which they could be seen brutally thrashing students by forcibly entering their hostel rooms. Six policemen including an inspector, two sub-inspectors and three constables were also suspended in this case.
