Ruckus at railway stations, bus stands in lakhs for UPSSC PET

A major chaos was witnessed at several bus depots and railway stations in Uttar Pradesh on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, as candidates traveled to their examination centers and back for a major state government service recruitment exam.

The scores of candidates had come for the two-day exam, the Preliminary Eligibility Test (PET), which ended today, attracting over 35 lakh applicants from across the state. The Preliminary Eligibility Test (PET), administered by the UP Subordinate Services Selection Commission, is a preliminary test that determines the eligibility of a candidate to take a subsequent recruitment test for Group C state government employment.

Viral photographs taken at Jhansi railway station in southern Uttar Pradesh on Saturday night showed several candidates stomping on the platform to board the trains. The video showed that there was hardly any room to stand, as seen in photographs taken by journalists from inside the cabin of the train.

Several examinees returning from examination centers at Kanpur’s Charbagh railway station told the media that they faced a lot of difficulty in reaching the examination centers due to overcrowding at trains, railway stations and bus stops.

Similar photographs were clicked by journalists at Hapur railway station in western Uttar Pradesh when several candidates were seen running for already running trains.

After the incident came to light, several people, including several opposition figures, tweeted videos and pictures claiming that the UP administration was to blame for the chaos and hardships the candidates had to go through. Following this, Uttar Pradesh State Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh addressed the students at Bareilly Bus Terminal today and promised to supply enough buses after the exams are over this afternoon.

The government has claimed that additional trains and buses are being arranged for the examinees and that several films trending on social media and being tweeted by opposition leaders are fake.
