Ukraine war: situation in Mariupol remains grim, street fighting at its center

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky pushed for talks as Russia signaled it was reducing its military operations and focusing on territory formerly claimed by Russian-backed separatists.

Here are the 10 latest developments in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine:

  1. In a potentially significant change, the Russian military says its first phase military operations in Ukraine is finished and the troops will now focus on the complete “liberation” of the Eastern Donbass region.

  2. Russian forces have taken control of the Slavutik city, where workers from the defunct Chernobyl nuclear plant live, Kyiv region governor Oleksandr Pavlyuk said.

  3. A new curfew will be imposed in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv from Saturday evening to Monday morning, Mayor Vitaly Klitschko announced. “The military command has decided to strengthen the curfew. It will start from 8:00 pm on Saturday and will continue till 7:00 am on Monday,” he said on Telegram.

  4. The city’s mayor said the situation remained dire in the besieged city of Mariupol, with street fighting at its center.

  5. Mariupol’s mayor said he had spoken to France’s ambassador to Ukraine about options for evacuating civilians after French President Emmanuel Macron said he would propose a plan to help Russia release people.

  6. Ukraine’s prosecutor general said 136 children have been killed in Ukraine since Russia launched a military operation 31 days ago.
