Russia playing “volatile role”: US on India’s S-400 missile deal

America’s concern remains over India’s purchase of the S-400 missile system from Russia.

Washington:

The United States has said that Russia is selling the S-400 missile defense system to India which “highlights the destabilizing role” it is playing in the Moscow region and potentially as well.

America’s concern remains over India’s purchase of multi-billion missile defense systems from Russia. India has insisted that its decisions are based on its national interest to protect its national security.

“In many ways, this doesn’t change the concerns we have with the S-400 system. I think it shines a spotlight on the volatile role that Russia is playing not only in the region but potentially beyond.” ,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters in his daily news conference on Thursday.

“When it comes to CAATSA sanctions, you have heard me say before, we have not made any determination regarding this transaction, but given the risk of sanctions for this particular transaction, we are working with the Government of India. Let’s continue to discuss it under CAATSA,” he said.

Price was responding to a question on the implications of the Russian S-400 system for India on its bilateral ties with New Delhi, which it called an imminent Ukrainian offensive given the unprecedented tensions with Moscow.

Despite strong objections from the US and threats of sanctions from the Biden administration, India has refused to make any changes to its decision and is proceeding with the purchase of the missile defense system.

“Whether it is India, whether it is any other country, we continue to urge all countries to avoid major new transactions for Russian weapons systems,” Price said.

The Biden administration has yet to make a decision on CAATSA sanctions. “I don’t have a timeline to present, but these are issues we continue to discuss with our partners in India,” Price said.
