Russia-Ukraine crisis: ‘India’s independent status welcome; reflect on our relationship

Describing India as a responsible global power, Russian Deputy Head of Mission Roman Babushkin said India’s approach to global matters such as the Ukraine-Russia crisis has been “free and balanced”.

“We welcome India’s independent status, which it took twice in the UN Security Council,” he told an online media briefing. PTI, He said Indian activities in the UN Security Council fully reflect “the merit of our special and privileged strategic partnership”.

During the UN Security Council meeting, India called on all sides to exercise restraint as tensions between Russia and the West reached a new high after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared two separate Ukrainian territories independent.

India said both sides should immediately “defuse tensions” keeping in mind the legitimate security interests of all countries. It also said that achieving long-term peace and stability in the region and beyond should be the goal of all countries.

“The Russian-India partnership is based on a strong and solid foundation. It is based on mutual trust,” Babushkin said. It is expected that the intensity of India-Russia relations will continue at the same level.

The Russian diplomat also said that Western powers were trying to destabilize the region, adding that Western sanctions against Russia would destabilize the global economy.
