Russia-Ukraine crisis: US sanctions will meet ‘strong response’, says Russia

Russia said on Wednesday that the new US sanctions would receive a “strong response” after US President Joe Biden announced new punishments against Moscow for “beginning” the invasion of Ukraine.

“There should be no doubt – sanctions will receive a strong response, not necessarily symmetrical, but well calibrated and sensitive to the US side,” Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said Washington had slapped a new round of sanctions to “change Russia’s course”.

“Russia has proved that at the cost of all sanctions, it is capable of minimizing the damage. And even more so, the pressure of sanctions undermines our determination to firmly defend our interests,” the statement said. Can’t impress.”

On Tuesday, Biden announced the “first tranche” of sanctions, including moves to starve Russia of funding and target financial institutions and the country’s “elite”.

Earlier this week Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized Ukraine’s separatist regions of Donetsk and Lugansk as independent states and put his military on stand-by to move to the Western-backed country.
