SAIL signs agreement with AAI to facilitate starting flights from Rourkela

State-owned Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and Airport Authority of India (AAI) signed an Operation and Management (O&M) agreement in New Delhi today to facilitate commercial operations from Rourkela, Odisha, Ministry of Steel Said a statement.

“Now, SAIL has signed an O&M contract with AAI, through Rourkela Steel Plant, to facilitate starting commercial flights from Rourkela. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has provided financial assistance for the up-gradation of this airport,” the ministry said.

“The Odisha government will provide security, fire and ambulance services besides helping with other local clearances. AAISAIL will operate and manage the airport on behalf of Rourkela Steel Plant.

The airport will provide relief to all air travelers in and around the industrial city of Rourkela.

The introduction of air services is also significant in view of the upcoming Hockey World Cup, where 20 matches out of a total of 44 matches are being played in Rourkela in January 2023.

Rourkela will see huge crowds during the duration of this global event and the need for air connectivity to the city will be a major requirement for logistical reasons.

SAIL, one of the largest steel companies in the country and a ‘Maharatna’ CPSE, is actively participating in the development of peripheral areas around its production facilities. This effort in public interest is likely to boost economic activities in this region.
