The Congress on Monday paid tribute to India’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary, with the former party chief Rahul Gandhi Having said that the most fitting tribute to him would be to ignite the flame of unity more than ever before.
Patel is considered the main architect of the integration of the erstwhile princely states with the Union of India.
“The iron of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel will unite India. Gandhi said in a tweet, “The most fitting tribute to him would be to keep the flame of unity, which he ignited faster than ever.”

Congress said from its official Twitter handle, “We pay heartfelt tributes to the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his birth anniversary. It was to his iron will that the nation was woven into a union. The party said, “A great son of Mother India, he continues to inspire us to fight the forces of hatred and division.”
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh congratulated Patel on his 147th birth anniversary.
Ramesh tweeted, “In October 2011, I had the privilege of delivering the Sardar Patel Memorial Lecture, in which I presented a side of him that is not very well known – his wit and humour.”
Sharing a picture of Nehru and Patel together, he said, “Whatever the distortions may have been, Patel and Nehru formed a unique jugalbandi for almost 30 years that shaped modern India.”
