SCERT Maharashtra, Storyweaver launch literacy program for children without access to online classes

On the occasion of International Literacy Day, September 8, Storyweaver, an initiative of Pratham Books, has launched in partnership two basic literacy programs in Marathi for children in remote areas of Maharashtra. State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and UNICEF. and UNICEF.

Storyweaver claims that these programs will help develop early reading fluency and comprehension for children in grades 1 to 3. It will be available both at home and in the classrooms. Resources are free to use online at Storyweaver and may also be deployed via print.

It is aimed at children who do not have regular internet at home and to keep them busy during school closures. Using resources from Storyweaver’s Basic Literacy Programme, the Read@Home Print Pack has been created for Class 1 and 2 children, curated with the help of SCERT and UNICEF.

The pack includes storybooks, related worksheets, links to audio-visual books, and supplementary materials. 25,000 packs will be distributed to children in the remote districts of Gadchiroli and Nandurbar. Additionally, a capacity building exercise will be conducted for over 1000 teachers to help support the read@home intervention.

The in-class program provides level storybooks with related lesson plans, book discussion questions, and video training materials for teachers. The Read@Home version of the program provides level storybooks in suggested reading sequences and worksheets with language learning outcomes in line with the Nipun India Guidelines.
