Around 25 school children experienced some tense moments at a railway under-bridge on Friday when a van carrying them, including some farmers, got stuck in a flood before locals, including some farmers, evacuated them to the wards safely. What was a daily route for the van driver turned out to be a harrowing experience for the young commuters, as the man failed to measure the strength of the water due to heavy rains lashing several parts of the state.

Students from different villages boarded the vehicle and the driver left for the school in Mahbubnagar, an official said. He entered the RUB which was submerged in water with the hope of possibly being able to make it. However, the water level was high after the rains during the last few days. He said the van regularly passes through the RUB but it seems that the driver has failed to estimate the amount of water today.

The engine of the vehicle failed under water pressure. However, farmers and other local residents reached the spot and rescued the children. The van was also pulled out of the tractor, he said. Many parts of Telangana have been receiving rain for the past few days as the Southwest Monsoon is active in the state.
