School rules: Army veteran inspires students at Great Lakes Learning Academy – Henry’s Club

East Lansing, Mich. (WILX) – From the battlefield to the school board – a Michigan man is using what he learned in the military to give back as a teacher.

“I joined the military when I was 17,” said Anthony Krukenberg. “Throughout my career, I had many deployments overseas.”

Krukenberg is a veteran who spent years testing Blackhawk helicopters and advising other soldiers. He is now advising students at Great Lakes Learning Academy as a substitute teacher and school board president.

“Being able to influence children in ways has been a very rewarding experience,” Krukeberg said. “I want to be someone I wish I had when I was a kid going through some tough times.”

Krukeberg was forced to retire from the military due to medical issues but was still hungry to serve, so he decided to pursue two bachelor’s degrees in history and social studies education from Michigan State University. He said that the ultimate goal is to become a school administrator to nurture the youth.

“I would like to be an administrator. I love the mentorship aspect, that’s what I love the most,” Krukberg said. “Mentorship is what gets someone into a current subject or an A-grade. It can be lifelong.”

In addition to education, Krukenberg also coaches other veterans and even about 10 youth sports teams. He said how much support he and his family have come from his inspiration to help others.

“I was engrossed in so many different things to give back as much as I could because everyone was very supportive throughout all of my deployments, taking care of my family and my kids,” Krukeberg said.
