Health Minister I. Subramaniam on Saturday said the ‘Kalaignarin Varumun Kappom’ scheme now includes cataract screening for the benefit of the poor.
“Two days back, the Union Health Ministry had said that it is the responsibility of the state government to provide free cataract treatment. The ‘Varumun Kappom’ camps involve 17 medical experts, and 1,250 camps will be organized in a year. Last year, 1,260 camps were organized in which nine lakh people were benefitted,” he said while addressing the gathering at the 37th Intraocular Implant and Refractive Surgery (IIRSI) Conference – IIRSI 2022.
460 medical camps have been organized so far this year, he said, adding: “For the first time, we have added screening for cataract. From now on, eye screening for cataract operation will be done in all the camps. Through this The poor will easily get the facility of cataract operation in the state.
He said the aim is to bring out a scheme for cataract-free Tamil Nadu, and urged ophthalmologists to join hands for the purpose.
IIRSI 2022 was a two-day annual conference consisting of live surgery and wet lab sessions to provide the participants with practical experience on novel surgical techniques and best treatment practices.
Amar Agarwal, General Secretary, IIRSI and President, Dr. Agarwal Eye Hospital, said that the aim of the conference was to educate the participants.
The Minister presented awards to international and Indian ophthalmologists and also released a book on the occasion. Others include Mahipal S Sachdev, Chairman of Scientific Committee of IIRSI, Vinod Arora, President of IIRSI, Lalit Verma, President of All India Ophthalmological Society Scientific Committee, Namrata Sharma, Professor of Ophthalmology at AIIMS, Delhi and Mohan Rajan, Treasurer. of IIRSI, spoke on the occasion.
