Second highest charge sheeting rate in the state

The state has the second highest chargesheet rate under the Indian Penal Code as per the crime statistics in India for 2020 released by the National Crime Records Bureau. At 94.90%, Kerala was only behind Gujarat (97.10%). Tamil Nadu stood third with 91.70 per cent.

Kerala recorded the lowest incidence of homicide with 323 victims in 306 incidents, a rate of 0.9 as compared to the national rate of 2.20, which is calculated per one lakh population.

However, the state seems to have faltered in treating its children and women well. While there were other states with more cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, Kerala had an incidence rate of 23, much above the national rate of 10.50. In 2,163 incidents in the state, 2,209 children were victims.

Kerala posted a high rate of incidence of 26.60 in terms of cases reported under various child-related Acts. There were 2,502 such incidents in the state.

When it comes to insulting the dignity of women, there were 442 incidents involving 454 victims, which was 2.40 more than the national rate of 1.0. Women in the state are facing cruelty at the hands of husbands or relatives as there were 2,736 such victims, though the rate of 14.7 was lower than the national rate of 17. Women victims of domestic violence were 165, a rate that was significantly higher than the national rate of 0.1 at 0.9.

There were 647 rape victims in 637 incidents in Kerala. Dowry-related incidents have rocked the state, but only three incidents have been registered in the state under the Dowry Prohibition Act.

In the state, 2,416 women were assaulted in 2,353 incidents and 1091 incidents of sexual assault in 1078 incidents and in both, the incidence rates were 12.80 and 5.90, which was 7.1 and 2.6 respectively. was much higher than the national rate.

Kerala ranks fourth in cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
