Sensex rises 246 points in early trade amid weak Asian markets

Equity benchmarks continued to decline for the third day on Thursday, June 2, 2022, with the Sensex down 246 points in early trade amid weak Asian markets.

The 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 246.06 points lower at 55,135.11.

From the Sensex pack, Power Grid, Larsen & Toubro, Bharti Airtel, ITC, Hindustan Unilever and HDFC were the biggest laggards.

In contrast, Reliance Industries, TCS, IndusInd Bank and State Bank of India were among the major gainers.

Elsewhere in Asia, markets in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Seoul were trading lower, while Shanghai was in the green.

The US stock markets closed with a fall on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the Sensex closed at 55,381.17, down 185.24 points or 0.33 per cent. Nifty closed at 16,522.75, down 61.80 points or 0.37 per cent.

Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude fell 1.56 per cent to $114.48 a barrel.

Foreign institutional investors sold shares worth a net ₹1,930.16 crore on Wednesday, according to stock exchange data.

“Inflation apprehensions as well as interest rate hikes are back on the front pages. FPI outflows have also hurt sentiments,” said Prashant Taapsee, Vice President (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd.
