AC Milan’s Serie A title defense is as good as ever after a 5-2 loss at the hands of Sassuolo on Sunday put the champions in deep trouble, while Monza beat Juventus 2-0 in Turin.

Everything that could have gone wrong for troubled Milan, they did at the sunny San Siro, with two goals disallowed for offside and a shocking defensive performance after also defeats by Lazio and Inter Milan in the past 10 days. Another condemns heavy losses.

If league leaders Napoli beat fierce rivals Roma in Sunday’s late match, Milan will be 15 points off the pace for the Scudetto, and they will also drop out of Serie A’s top four if either Roma or Lazio, who are on the day Later host Fiorentina, avoid relegation.

Next up is against second-placed Inter, who thrashed Milan 3-0 in the Super Cup less than a fortnight ago as Milan look to end a dangerous slump that began with a draw with Roma three weeks ago. Started with a two goal lead. ,

“We have to react, we are probably not going to win the title again, but we have to fight to qualify for the Champions League,” Pioli told Sky in Italy.

Pioli’s side are in fourth place after an inspired performance from Domenico Berardi allowed Sassuolo to win for the first time since late October.

The Italian took his team’s fourth place and had a hand in three more as Grégoire Defrel, Davide Fratessi, Armand Loriente and Matthias Heinrich all scored in free-wheeling performances.

Alessio Dionisi’s side are in 16th place but Sunday’s shock win put them eight points clear of Verona, who sit just inside the relegation zone and face Udinese on Monday night.

“Milan are having difficulties, it can happen in periods of the season when you play a lot of matches but we are still talking about a great team in their stadium,” Berardi said.

“It is not easy to come here and win.”

Monza’s Juve double

Monza completed an impressive double over Juve on a day of shocks in Italy, a mature performance belying the fact that the Silvio Berlusconi-owned club is playing in its first Serie A season.

Bought by former Italian prime minister Berlusconi in 2018, Minnows Monza confirmed their meteoric rise from the lower leagues to move above Juve and into 11th place.

First-half strikes from Patrick Siuria and Juve old boy Danny Motta were enough for Monza to seal a historic win at the Allianz Stadium, with Gianluca Caprari’s superb early finish also being disallowed for offside.

“It’s a special day. I’m happy I could do my job and for the boys who worked so hard today,” said Mota, who did not play a senior game for Juve, to DAZN.

Mota’s third goal of the season was indicative of how comfortable they feel at this level, as the Portuguese slotted past Wojciech Szczecny and headed home after brilliant work from Carlos Augusto.

September’s 1–0 victory over Juve was Monza’s first win in Serie A as well as Rafael Palladino’s first match in charge.

Sunday’s victory came after the latest performance which showed why his team will almost certainly be in Italy’s top flight next season.

Goalkeeper Michele De Gregorio stepped up with brilliant saves from attacks by Angel Di Maria, Arkadiusz Milik and Manuel Locatelli when Monza’s defense had to lay siege to Juventus in the second half.

Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri said, “We all have to be responsible for the performance of the first half.”

“In our last three (league) games we have collected one point and conceded 10 goals in a way that was not good enough.”

The return of Dusan Vlahovic after three months away could not prevent Juve suffering their fourth league defeat of the season.

That, and a points penalty earlier this month for illegal transfer activity, has left Juve in 13th place and 14 points off the European places.
