Serum Institute makes vaccines available at ‘cup of tea’ cost: Poonawalla

Serum Institute of India President Cyrus Poonawalla on Monday said the poorer countries of the world are using company-made vaccines as the doses are made available at the cost of “cups of tea”.

Poonawalla was speaking at the Pune International Business Summit organized by the Maheratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), where he was honored to receive the Padma Bhushan award.

He said that two-thirds of the world’s population has been protected from one or more SII vaccines.

“Most of our vaccines have been used by poor countries. UNICEF and other philanthropic organizations came forward to buy the vaccine, which I provided with the help of my staff and scientists to make it affordable at the cost of a cup of tea, and it made The world is self-sufficient for most communicable vaccines needed to protect children and adults,” he said.

He said that the main crux of this matter is that the temple which has low cost, high production, the same temple was set up to make 90 percent of India’s requirement of Kovid vaccine.

He said, “All over the world, they are surprised how a company in India has been able to provide vaccines to protect the rest of the countries. Not just Africa, I must stress that 170 countries worldwide are producing SII vaccines. use.”

“Experts around the world have estimated that about 30 million children’s lives were saved because we made available affordable vaccines,” he said.
