Sevilla Hold Betis in Fiery Derby, Atletico Drop Points Again

Nemanja Gudelez equalized late as struggling Sevilla claimed a 1-1 draw at Real Betis in a derby that had three red cards on Sunday.

Betis was hoping to consolidate his hold on the top four in La Liga after failing to win fellow European candidates Atlético Madrid, Real Sociedad, and Villarreal.

This was set to happen when Jesus Navas cast his net shortly before Gonzalo Montiel was sent off to the visitors.

But Nabil Fekir was also dismissed in injury time in the first half and Benito Villamarin was stunned when in-form striker Borja Iglesias was shown a red card in the 49th minute after a VAR review.

Unexpectedly, Sevilla dominated in the second round against nine of Betis’ men and finally equalized in the 81st minute when Gudelez made a home run from long distance.

The Serbian international also hit the crossbar and made a fine save from Betis’ goalkeeper Claudio Bravo in the closing stages, but the hosts held on for a point.

Sevilla went out of the relegation zone on goal difference, without a four-game win in La Liga. Betis finished fourth, Diego Simeone’s men scored behind Atlético after a 1–1 draw with a low Espanyol at home.

The Catalan club played for over an hour after the dismissal of Leandro Cabrera, but took a surprising lead through Sergi Darder with 28 minutes remaining.

Joo Felix came in as a substitute and saved a point in the 78th minute, but Atlético remained without a win in four games in all competitions.

Real Sociedad also were quickly reduced to 10 men in their 1–1 draw with Valencia, while Villarreal fell behind in a 2–0 home loss to Real Mallorca.
