Kerala Assembly Speaker AN Shamseer on Tuesday courted controversy when he made a remark on Congress MLA Shafi Parambil during the proceedings of the House.

The remarks came when opposition legislators were protesting inside the state assembly over the fire at the Brahmapuram waste plant.

Opposition has given adjournment motion notice on police action on UDF MLAs protesting against Brahmaputra incident. The Speaker refused to allow the adjournment notice and said that the issue had already been discussed on Monday. Opposition MLAs created ruckus in the House regarding this.

Speaker Shamseer was heard telling opposition MLAs Rosie M John, TJ Vinod, CR Mahesh and TJ Sanesh Kumar that they had won last time with a very narrow margin. The speaker said, “You must also come here in the 16th Vidhan Sabha. You won by a small margin, don’t tarnish your image.

Then he further says, ‘People are watching this Shafi, next time you lose, you will lose there.’

Shafi, a third-time Palakkad MLA who was elected after defeating BJP’s E Sreedharan in 2021, said it is for the people of Palakkad to decide his fate if he contests.

“First my party will decide whether I should contest the next election or not. And if they decide to field me, the people of Palakkad will decide whether I should win or not. We should tell the speaker that he should do his job properly with responsibility.

Shafi said that instead of accepting the rights of the opposition in the assembly, the speaker is following the instructions of the CM and his party.

“After I lose, who should win the Palakkad seat? The speaker should explain what he meant by it. No one can say who is sitting on the speaker’s chair. We are trying to bring to the fore the problems faced by the people of one area and the problems they face in breathing.

Shafi said, “The speaker and the CPIM should not forget this. We did not destroy the chairs, computers or microphones inside the assembly. He is sitting on the speaker’s chair. He has the responsibility to protect the rights of the opposition but the speaker who is afraid of Pinarayi Vijayan has failed as a speaker.
