Shah: Congress asks PM Modi to inquire about Manipur as he did for Delhi floods | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Appreciating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s gesture of calling Union home minister Amit Shah from France on Thursday to inquire about the flood situation in Delhi, the Congress has tried to corner him for not making any statement on the Manipur violence during his visit to the US last month.
In a tweet, Congress MP and general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said the prime minister dialled home minister from Paris to inquire about the flood situation in New Delhi.
He said, “It is good that he showed such concern. Why was no such call made when he was away in the US and Manipur was burning? Manipur is still burning while the prime minister is in France. But looks like he has taken a vow of total and complete silence on Manipur.”
According to sources, PM Modi had reached out Shah from France to collect information about the flood-like situation that has gripped parts of the national capital.
Modi sought an update from the home minister regarding the ongoing relief efforts and measures being taken to tackle the situation in Delhi.
Shah, in his conversation with the PM, briefed him about the situation in Delhi and reassured him that the water levels are expected to recede within the next 24 hours, the sources said.
To ensure the safety of the affected population, Shah informed PM Modi that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in various areas of Delhi for rescue and relief operations.
Sources further revealed that both Shah and Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena are continuously monitoring the flood situation in Delhi, striving to mitigate the impact and assist those in distress.
Shortly after the conversation, Saxena confirmed that PM Modi had taken stock of the situation and had directed all necessary steps to be taken to address the crisis.
“Honourable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji called from France to enquire about the waterlogging and flood situation in Delhi and the efforts being made to deal with it,” Saxena said in a tweet in Hindi.
The Congress has said the PM should have showed the same concern about Manipur which has been reeling under ethnic violence since May 3. The opposition party has been consistently demanding a statement from the PM on Manipur few days after the violence broke out in Manipur.
It had sought the PM’s statement during his US visit last month as well. The Congress has asked Modi to issue a statement appealing to the warring groups in Manipur to maintain peace.
However, the PM is yet to issue any statement.
Meanwhile, the deluge in Delhi has caused significant inconvenience to the residents, resulting in the disruption of daily life, traffic congestion, and damage to property.
Roads turned into rivers and water gushed into houses, medical facilities, crematoriums and shelter homes in Delhi as the Yamuna river water level rose to record high, causing immense hardship for the people.
The heavy rains have led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, making it challenging for people to move around and affecting essential services.
