If Mohammed Shami is the master of full ball and seam-up pace bowling in India, then Mohammed Siraj is his protégé.

While Ashrit has headlined four ODIs so far in 2023, Master was at his artistic best on Saturday, with Siraj playing the supporting role to perfection. The pair’s lethal opening spell, dominated by Shami’s literally unstoppable deliveries, wrecked the New Zealand top-order.

His effective, economical and rewarding spell saw India bundle out the Kiwis for just 108 to make the first international game in Raipur truly memorable.

play-time is priority

Despite being the most senior fast bowler in India’s unit, Shami played down questions about his evolving role in the team, especially in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. But he stressed the fact that playing time was a top priority in an era dominated by workload management.

“I always prefer playing matches over practice. It is always better to play as many matches as possible to prepare for a big event.”

“The load is being managed and it is being managed properly. I hope the key players are in a good zone (before the World Cup). Despite dismissing a question about his role, it is clear from his conduct on the field that Shami is playing the role of a senior to perfection.

He has consistently been in the ear of young fast bowlers, be it Siraj or Shardul Thakur or Umran Malik during nets sessions.

to encourage

“I always talk to the bowlers. I know when one is making efforts but not getting the desired results, it can be very helpful if you talk to your partner. This is the role I like to play when I am bowling.

With the teams traveling to Indore on Sunday afternoon for Tuesday’s last ODI, India might be tempted to rest Shami and give pacer Umran a game.

Even if he is off the field, one can rest assured that Shami will do his bit to help another youngster.
