As the water level in America’s Lake Mead went down, a mysterious barrel from the depths emerged from a human corpse. When police began investigating the case, a woman saw the gruesome discovery as a business opportunity. For a 42-year-old Las Vegas-based business owner named Charlie Hanks, he recently added a new item to his shop located on South Rainbow Boulevard. As the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports, Hanks bottled its water and is now selling it as “Lake Mead Corpse Water” after bizarre barrels arrived at the lake.
Hanks runs a spiritual shop, named Blasfem Boutique, where he displays some fascinating items related to witchcraft, magic, and other dark things. It first began selling corpse water on May 13 for an event called Market Macabre. Hanks thought it would appeal to those looking for mysterious and creepy objects at the event.
“As a joke, I said, ‘I should water Lake Mead zombies because of the corpses in the lake,’ and then I made it up,” Hanks said. But, what started as a joke for the hacks soon caught everyone’s attention and went viral. Hanks stored water in small vial-like bottles and posted the photos to Facebook, Instagram and other social media.
Hanks lists small bottles of Zombies water for $7.77 a bottle and has managed to sell 75 bottles online. “We sold 50 individually in and before the store,” she said.
However, there is a catch. The water that Hanks is selling is not actually corpse water used in witchcraft. Hanks has filled the bottles with dirt, water, glass stones and green mica to give them a spooky look, and even designed the labels himself. But, he insisted that he did not take water from Lake Mead which is already drying up.
Hanks highlights that the original corpse’s water comes from the first washing of a dead boy in the morgue.
While most people find Hanks’ new product humorous, some accuse him of cashing in on someone’s death. Hanks insisted that his focus was not on profits and that most of the products in his shop were just jokes.
