Shashi Tharoor eligible, may contest for Congress president’s post: Kerala chief

Shashi Tharoor termed reports of him contesting for the post of Congress President “mere speculation”

Thiruvananthapuram:

Kerala Congress chief K Sudhakaran today said Congress is a democratic party and its Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor is eligible to contest for the party’s presidential election.

Mr. Sudhakaran said that if Shashi Tharoor wants to contest there is no need to blame him as Congress is a democratic party and its members have the right to contest for the top post of the party.

“What is surprising in this? Is he not a qualified candidate? All members of the Indian National Congress have the right to contest elections because it is a democratic party. If I want to contest elections, I can do that too. The party will accept it. If I get votes, I will win”, Mr. Sudhakaran said while replying to a question from reporters.

He said that Congress has the power to resolve such issues through democratic process.

Amid speculations about his possible candidature, Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday said that he will decide whether to throw his hat in the ring or not only after the election notification comes.

At the same time, Shashi Tharoor has also termed the news of his possibility of contesting for the post of party president as ‘mere speculation’.

Keeping all options open, the Thiruvananthapuram MP has said that the election to the top post of Congress is “good for the party”.

The Congress Working Committee on Sunday decided to hold the election of the full-time president of the party on October 17.

The notification for the elections will be issued on September 22, while the filing of nominations will begin from September 24 and will continue till September 30, the party’s Central Election Authority chairman Madhusudan Mistry said after a nearly 30-minute meeting of the Congress Working Committee. ,
