Shashi Tharoor ready for public debate among Congress presidential candidates

“The answer to the Congress’s current challenges lies in a combination of effective leadership and organizational reforms,” ​​Tharoor said in an exclusive interview.

Mallikarjun Kharge and Tharoor are in the fray for the Congress’ presidential election after the nomination of former Jharkhand minister KN Tripathi was rejected on Saturday.

Speaking about what he brought to the table, Tharoor said he has proven a credible track record in leading organizations at the highest levels, be it at the United Nations or as the founder-president of the All India Professional Congress.

The former Union minister said he has outlined a set of priorities that he believes can help strengthen the Congress and take over the BJP’s machinery.

“Since our current position has been widely condemned, it could be an advantage to be able to spend a lot more time in the existing party organization and look at it from a fresh perspective,” Tharoor told PTI.

When asked about his opinion on the public debate between party’s presidential candidateTharoor said he was open to the idea. “We have no ideological differences, but rather a question of how we propose to achieve the objectives we have already agreed upon,” he said.

“As I have often pointed out, the exchange of ideas between candidates can have beneficial effects for the party – for example, we have seen global interest in the British Conservative Party during his recent leadership race, a phenomenon known as We have already seen that in 2019. Tharoor said, when a dozen candidates contested to replace Theresa May and Boris Johnson emerged on top.

The date for scrutiny of nomination papers was October 1, while the last date for withdrawal of nominations was October 8. The final list of candidates will be published on October 8 at 5 pm.

If needed, the polling will be held on October 17. The counting of votes will take place on October 19 and the result will be declared on the same day. More than 9,000 Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) representatives will vote in the election.
