Shimla, Chandigarh topped in NITI Aayog’s first SDG Urban India Index. full list here

Shimla has topped the first Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) index released by NITI Aayog on Tuesday, while Coimbatore and Chandigarh have secured the second and third positions respectively.

56 urban local bodies have been ranked on 77 SDG indicators related to poverty, zero hunger, good health and wellbeing, quality education, gender equality among others.

The index has been prepared by NITI Aayog-GIZ and BMZ under the umbrella of Indo-German Development Cooperation.

The SDG Urban Index and Dashboard ranks 77 SDG indicators in 56 urban areas out of the 46 targets of the SDG framework. The data on these indicators has been obtained from official data sources such as NFHS, NCRB, U-DISE, data portals of various ministries and other government data sources, the press release said.

The index and dashboard will further strengthen SDG localization and establish robust SDG monitoring at the city level. According to the press statement, it highlights the strengths and gaps of ULB-level data, monitoring and reporting systems.

Tools like this index and dashboard will contribute to building an ecosystem in which all stakeholders will be equipped to adopt and implement data-driven decision making. According to the statement, this transformational change is essential given the increasing prominence of our cities and urban areas in charting the future of development in India.

“Cities are fast becoming engines of growth. The SDG Urban Index and Dashboard, a product of an innovative partnership between NITI Aayog and GIZ, will go a long way in establishing a robust SDG monitoring system in our cities, and it is a The milestone step is our SDG localization journey,” said Rajiv Kumar, Vice President, NITI Aayog during the launch.

Of the 56 urban areas included in the index, 44 are those with a population of more than one million. A press release states that there are state capitals with a population of less than 12 lakhs.
