The fire that broke out at a shop in Tondiarpet was doused by fire and rescue service personnel in an operation that lasted for several hours on Wednesday.

A fire broke out in a shop in Parameswaran Nagar on Ennore High Road late Wednesday night.

At 11.30 pm, firefighters from Tondiarpet, Mint, Royapuram, Korukkupet and Esplanade were pressed into service. Police personnel used a public address system to ask nearby residents to come out of their homes.

As an underground oil pipeline passes near the crash site, more than 20 tanker lorries were used to extract oil from the nearby terminal to avoid further damage.

A senior official of Fire and Rescue Services said, “The fire broke out due to the presence of highly inflammable materials like paints and thinners in the shop. We used foam and water to douse the fire and put it out by morning.
