Water level in several major dams in Kerala receded on Friday following deficient rains and various district authorities, in consultation with the IMD and the State Disaster Management Authority, started shutting down the shutters that were opened to let the excess water flow. Meanwhile, Pathanamthitta district collector Divya S Iyer said that the shutters of the Pampa dam have been closed as the water level of the reservoir’s storage capacity has dropped to 74 per cent.

“The shutter of the Kakki dam was brought down by 30 cm. First it was raised by 90 cm and later it was brought down by 60 cm to release the water,” the collector said.

The shutters of the dams were opened on Tuesday after the water in these reservoirs reached the danger mark. The three shutters of the Cheruthoni dam lift 35 cm (cm) to release one lakh liters of water per second.

The state received heavy rains during October 15 and 16, resulting in widespread landslides and floods in the south central districts of Kerala, besides the loss of more than 24 lives.
