Siambalapatiya: Sri Lanka: Deputy Speaker Ranjit Siambalapatiya resigns once again – Times of India

Colombo: As the ongoing protest in Sri Lanka against Rajapaksa Government released, MP Ranjith siyambalpatiyaWho was re-elected as the Vice President of Sri Lankan ParliamentDecided to resign from his post.
MP Ranjit Siambalapatia had given information Gotabaya Rajapakse, the President of Sri Lanka, that he has decided to resign from the post of Vice President at the earliest, reported the Colombo page. Siambalapatia took the decision within 24 hours of his re-election as the Deputy Speaker, winning a majority in Parliament on Thursday.
Reportedly, Siambalapatia’s resignation will be submitted to Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He had also given the reason for his resignation in a letter to the President.
Earlier, Ranjit Siyambalapatiya had resigned as Sri Lanka’s deputy speaker on April 5, allowing parliament to elect a new deputy speaker, Colombo Page reported. He made this decision after several political parties, including the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which he represented, became independent and joined the opposition in parliament.
However, on Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s appeal, he remained in the post of deputy speaker till April 30. Nimal Siripala da Silva, a Member of Parliament, proposed the reappointment of Ranjit Siambalapatia as the Deputy Speaker. His proposal was also supported by a group of MPs along with Sushil Premjayanta, who had already declared himself an independent Member of Parliament.
As reported by Colombo Pages, MP Ranjit Madduma Bandara nominated MP Imtiaz Baker Marker to represent the opposition. A secret ballot was arranged in the Parliament, in which Ranjit Siambalapatiya got a total of 148 votes, while his opposition Imtiaz Baker Marker got 65 votes, resulting in Siambalapatiya’s victory.
However, with the resignation of Siambalapatiya as deputy speaker, Sri Lanka was deeply immersed in the impending economic crisis.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is grappling with acute food and power shortages. The slowdown in the economy is due to a lack of foreign exchange due to a strain on tourism during the Covid-19 pandemic. The country is not able to buy enough fuel and gas, while people are being denied even basic facilities.
The current economic situation in the island country has led to nationwide protests demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister. Mahinda Rajapakse and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
