Signs of rebellion? Chirag Paswan installed the father’s statue in the official residence, now allotted to Ashwini Vaishnav

In what could be read as a sign of silent discontent, LJP chief Chirag Paswan has installed a bust of his father late Ram Vilas Paswan at 12, Janpath, where the former minister lived with his family for over three decades. . . The development comes amidst asking the Paswan family to vacate the bungalow after the death of the Vice-Chancellor.

In July, Chirag and other occupants of the 12, Janpath bungalow were issued an eviction notice by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, asking them to vacate the accommodation allotted to their late father. The bungalow has now been allotted to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav.

Bangla has been the official address of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), which regularly held its organizational meetings and other related events there. Ram Vilas Paswan, one of the most prominent Dalit leaders of the country, died in October last year at the age of 74.

He was a minister since 1989 in central governments led by parties of contrasting ideological persuasion, from the Janata Dal to the Congress and the BJP.

While the family was to vacate the bungalow within a year of Paswan’s death, a deadline expired next month, sources close to Chirag said they have got an extension of a few more months.

Now, the installation of the bust can complicate matters. The BJP leadership fears that Chirag may politicize the issue by refusing to go out.

Chirag is on a tour across Bihar to rally in support of his leadership.

Meanwhile, there has been no demand from Vaishnav to vacate the premises immediately. However, they will need to move to a bigger residence at the earliest given their official requirements as they have cabinet portfolios for three major departments – Railways, Information and Technology and Communications.

Sources said that Chirag has demanded an extension of his stay with the government, saying that he will travel in the memory of his father in Bihar. People close to the young MP said the family wanted to retain the house till Paswan’s first death anniversary.
