Singapore President, Parliament Speaker and Minister test COVID positive

Singapore’s President Halimah Yacoub, Parliament Speaker Tan Chuan-jin and Minister Edwin Tong have tested positive for COVID-19.

Ms. Halimah, 67, said in a Facebook post on Monday: “Just tested positive for COVID-19 with mild flu-like symptoms. Thankfully, I have been vaccinated and raised. I hope to recover soon and I am sorry that I had to miss this week’s events. ,

Mr Tan, 53, also said in a post on Monday that he has tested positive for COVID-19 The Straits Times,

Mr Tan took an antigen rapid test before Monday’s parliamentary meeting and it came back positive, meaning he will miss both days of the current parliament meeting.

President Mr Tan wrote in his post, “Hopefully the symptoms will be mild. Continue to be alert. Vaccinations help to get a booster when it’s your turn.”

Monday’s parliament meeting also revealed that the Minister of Culture, Communities and Youth, Mr Tong, 52, was also suffering from COVID-19.

In the last 28 days, Singapore has reported 1,40,965 COVID infections.

There have been 14,73,180 infections and 1,419 COVID-related deaths in the country since the outbreak of the infectious disease in 2019.
