Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman interacted with vendors and local residents during her visit to Mylapore market in Tamil Nadu capital Chennai on Saturday. According to a video shared, he also bought vegetables from a roadside shop vendor while greeting the locals.

Nirmala Sitharaman’s office said in a tweet, “During her day-long visit to Chennai, Nirmala Sitharaman made a stop at Mylapore market, where she interacted with vendors and local residents and also bought vegetables.”

While netizens appreciated the interaction with local vendors and the “ground-zero” understanding of the common man, some also expressed concern over the rising prices.

A Twitter user said, “Ma’am, people’s problem regarding prices of vegetables, fruits and daily necessities needs to be understood at the grassroots level.”

Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation has been at or above the upper tolerance limit of 6 per cent since January. With the rupee touching a new all-time low of 82.32 against the US dollar on Friday, experts have raised concerns. A weak rupee has an impact on inflation as it pushes up the cost of imported components and products, including edible oils, during the current festive season.

However, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday defended the government and said there was a time in India, almost a decade ago, when double-digit inflation was considered normal.

He said the government had ordered the RBI to target inflation and keep it between 2-6 per cent. Referring to several developed countries suffering from high levels of inflation, he said, “India is successfully keeping inflation moderate.”
