Officials told Hindustan Times that these colleges will now offer selected undergraduate courses in six regional languages ​​from this academic year.

Eight out of these 14 colleges will offer BTech courses in Hindi while others will offer options in technical education in Marathi, Bengali, Tamil and Telugu. The council had said that the implementation is being done in a phased manner and other languages ​​will follow.

AICTE President Anil Sahasrabuddhe said colleges in Karnataka and Haryana have already obtained permission from the council to teach some engineering programs in Hindi and Kannada. He said, “Four colleges in Karnataka and two colleges in Haryana approached AICTE to allow Kannada and Hindi respectively in the existing seats. Now 20 colleges in the country will offer engineering courses in six regional languages.

However, he added that students still have doubts when it comes to teaching engineering courses in regional languages. “We are expecting the numbers to increase after these 20 colleges successfully teach in regional languages,” he said. Sahasrabuddhe said colleges in Gujarat and Odisha have also approached the council for permission to teach in regional languages.

The 20 institutes offering courses in regional languages ​​from academic 2021-22 are Graphic Era (Deemed to be University) Dehradun, Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering Pune, Technic Polytechnic Institute Hooghly, West Bengal and Pranveer Singh Institute of Technology Kanpur. . Four colleges are from Uttar Pradesh, two from Rajasthan and one each from Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Anna University had earlier also allowed its two affiliated colleges Erode Sengunthar College and Rathinam Technical Complex to start engineering courses in Tamil. Erode Sengunthar College will offer Mechanical Engineering in Tamil and Rathinam Technical College will offer Computer Science in the regional language.

To meet the AICTE norms, online and offline content is being prepared in regional languages. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked the council “Developing an ecosystem of technical education in Indian languages ​​and translation of global journals into regional languages.”
