SKIMS students name cleared in internal probe for cheering for Pakistan during cricket match

Students of Sher e Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, one of the two institutes that came under criticism for allegedly cheering Pakistan’s victory against India last Sunday, were not part of the joy, neither did its campus was used, a fact-finding panel constituted by SKIMS has disclosed in its report.

The report is based on a detailed study and analysis of the video that surfaced on social media platforms soon after Pakistan’s T20I win against India in the ongoing championship in Dubai. It concluded that neither its campus was used nor the students of the institute participated in the ceremony.

SKIMS Director Dr AG Ahangar had constituted a five-member team, drawn from senior faculty, to examine whether the students really cheered for Pakistan or not. The inquiry panel was tasked to check the veracity of the video and link SKIMS to the controversy.

“Yes, we have started the investigation and the committee will submit its report to the government within 48 hours,” Ahangar told News18 on Tuesday.

The police on Monday registered two separate cases under anti-terrorism charges against the staff and students of SKIMS and Government Medical College, Srinagar after two separate videos surfaced on social media in which the students were seen as members of the Indian cricket team. Was seen cheering for the victory of Pakistan against

To celebrate Pakistan’s victory over India, crackers and fireworks were burst in many areas of Srinagar. The police had registered an FIR under sections 13 ULPA, 105 A, and 505 IPC for the purported video to SKIMS at Soura police station.

Another video in which some girl students were seen “crying and raising slogans in favor of Pakistan” is purportedly linked to the Government Medical College in Srinagar. A separate FIR has been registered under Section 13 ULPA at Karan Nagar Police Station.

The fact-finding team of SKIMS in its report has argued that the central hall or entertainment mess in the unmarried hostel shown in the viral video is not “even from a distance” on the SKIMS campus.

The team, analyzing the video, revealed that there is no central pillar in the hall of SKIMS hostel, as shown in the video. Similarly, the color of the wall in the hall at SKIMS is green compared to the white color seen in the video.

The report concluded that the appearance of any student in the video was not identical to that of the students studying in SKIMS. Sources told News18, “The location difference in the video along with the analysis of the venue of the hostel has led us to conclude that no such celebration took place at SKIMS.”

The fact finding team completed the investigation within the stipulated time and handed it over to the director, who has forwarded it to the LG administration. Neither Ahangar nor any of the panel members were available for comment. A SKIMS official refused to divulge details saying the report has been submitted to the higher authorities.

While the investigation is expected to ease pressure on SKIMS, it is not clear whether the police will include the investigation report in their investigation. As far as the GMC case is concerned, according to the FIR lodged at the Karna Nagar police station, the police is investigating it separately.
