Smriti Mandhana named in ICC T20I Women’s Team of the Year; No Indian in men’s category

The men’s team included three Pakistanis, including captain Babar Azam, who has been named captain.

Dubai Star India opener Smriti Mandhana was on Wednesday named in the ICC T20 Women’s Team of the Year for her stellar performances across the format in 2021 but no Indian made it to the men’s team.

The stylish left-handed batsman, who is the vice-captain of the Indian team in the format, was the country’s highest scorer in the format in 2021 with 255 runs at an average of 31.87.

The 25-year-old scored two fifties in the nine matches he played and gave his team regular quick starts, as evidenced by his strike-rate of 131.44.

While Mandhana was the only Indian, several members of the England team were in the squad, with Nat Scriver as the captain.

The veteran England all-rounder put on impressive performances throughout the year. Batting in the middle order, Sciver scored a total of 153 runs, including a half-century, and took 10 wickets at an excellent average of 20.20.

England’s Tammy Beaumont is at the top along with Mandhana. The 30-year-old’s credible presence at the top of the order helped get off to a steady start to the England regular. He played nine matches and scored 303 runs at an average of 33.66, including three fifties.

Danny Wyatt, wicketkeeper Amy Jones and spinner Sophie Ecclestone are the other English players.

Ireland’s Gaby Lewis, South African trio of Laura Wolvaardt, Shabnim Ismail and Marijane Cup and Zimbabwe’s Lorin Firi are in the rest of the playing XI.

Babar captain of men’s team

There was no Indian representation in the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year 2021, which included three Pakistanis, including skipper Babar Azam, who has been named captain.

Besides Azam, openers Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi, who did the sensational T20 World Cup, were named in the squad.
