A police case has been registered against three people in connection with the appearance of ice in the shape of a ‘linga’ at the famous Trimbakeshwar temple in Maharashtra’s Nashik in June last year, which has now been termed as a hoax by the probe committee.

A committee constituted by the temple trust probed the incident during the Amarnath Yatra, examined CCTV footage and focused on the three “priests” allegedly involved, an official said.

“The three priests had placed a piece of ice on the Shivling and circulated a video of it. They allegedly committed this act at the opening of the Amarnath cave shrine (in Jammu and Kashmir) to attract devotees here too.

He explained that “Purohits” perform rituals and prayers in the temple, while “Pujaris” are involved in the maintenance and management of the sanctum sanctorum, including cleaning the ‘Nirmalya’.

Based on a complaint by temple liaison officer Rashvi Jadhav, a case was registered on February 8 against the three priests for crimes committed at the place of worship, cheating and conspiracy, an official of Trimbakeshwar police station said.

No arrest has been made in the matter and further investigation is on, the official said.

Trimbakeshwar, located at the mouth of the Godavari, is one of the 12 ‘Jyotirlingas’ in the country. It is highly protected as the ‘Linga’ in the temple symbolizes Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
