Cases of girls returning home after refusing to wear hijab in PU colleges

Pre-university and degree colleges in Karnataka, which were shut after some campuses turned violent over dress code, reopened on Wednesday with high security in sensitive areas. However, some colleges that had earlier witnessed violence over the dress code remained closed, while protests took place in other places when girls wearing hijab were not allowed to attend classes.

The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Pre-University in Udupi district, which witnessed tension earlier, is still closed. In Shivamogga district, three government colleges – two in Shivamogga town and one in Sagar – which saw incidents of dress code last week also remained closed. The Murusavir Math (SJMV) Women’s College in Hubballi closed for a day on Wednesday following some tension over girls not being allowed inside the hijab.

In Bengaluru, except for minor protests at Malleswaram College, most colleges reopened and police security was deployed around the colleges without any untoward incident. In degree colleges where there are no uniforms, many students went to classes wearing hijabs as usual.
