1. Quit Smoking: This is a common denominator in most people who suffer heart attacks at an early age. Also stop using smokeless tobacco. Non-smokers should avoid passive smoking. It is important to note that even if one is a smoker, smoking cessation significantly reduces the risk of a heart attack. So stop as soon as possible.

2. Exercise Regularly: This will not only help reduce body weight, but also reduce the chances of developing conditions that increase the risk of heart attack, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. Make sure you exercise at least 150 minutes a week, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous workouts. However, if you can’t, don’t give up. Engage in activities like gardening, housekeeping and climbing stairs – small, short activities will go a long way in ensuring a healthy heart.

3. a balanced diet: eat fruits and vegetables. If you are a non-vegetarian, eat lean meats like fish and chicken. Reduce your intake of red meat, processed carbs and alcohol.

4. Healthy body weight: Try to keep your BMI under 25. (BMI = kg/m2; kg is a person’s weight in kilograms and m2 is their height in meters squared)

5. Good sleep: Make sure you enjoy 7-8 hours of quality sleep. A person who sleeps well is less likely to develop high blood pressure, diabetes and depression.

6. Manage Stress: Meditate, and learn relaxation techniques.

7. Regular health check-up: This is the last but not the least! Start regular BP checkup from 18 years. If you do not have BP between 18 and 39, you can get tested once a year and regularly thereafter. Cholesterol screening should start before 40. If there is no family history of diabetes, start screening in your 40s; But if there is a family history, start first.
