Sourav Ganguly reacts to Virat Kohli’s decision to step down as Team India’s T20I captain after T20 World Cup

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly praised Virat Kohli Deemed to be a “true asset” for Indian cricket, the 32-year-old announced that he will step down as the captain of Team India from the shortest format of the game after the ICC T20 World Cup. Ganguly thanked the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain for his performance as India’s T20I captain and wished him all the best. “Virat Has been a true asset to Indian cricket and has led with enthusiasm. He is one of the most successful captains in all formats. The decision has been taken keeping in mind the future roadmap”, Ganguly said through an official BCCI statement.

He added, “We thank Virat for his tremendous performance as T20 captain. We wish him all the very best for the upcoming World Cup and beyond and hope he continues to score a lot of runs for India.”

Kohli He took over as India’s T20I captain in 2017 after MS Dhoni stepped down. He will also lead the national team in the upcoming T20 World Cup for the first time. Despite being one of the greatest batsmen in modern-day cricket, Kohli is yet to lead India to an ICC title.

He will continue to lead India in Tests and ODIs.

Meanwhile, BCCI Honorary Secretary Jay Shah assured Indian cricket fans that the transition would be smooth and the management was ready for the situation.

“We have a clear roadmap for Team India. Keeping the workload in mind and ensuring that we have a smooth transition, Mr. Virat Kohli has decided to step down as T20I captain after the upcoming World Cup. I have been in discussion with Virat and the leadership team. The last six months and the decision has been thought through.

“Virat will continue to contribute to shaping the future of Indian cricket both as a player and as a senior member of the team,” Shah was quoted as saying in an official BCCI statement.
