Rain abandoned Friday’s first one-day international between South Africa and the Netherlands at Centurion, with the rest of their three-match series in doubt after a new coronavirus variant was discovered in the country.

The Dutch were 11 for no loss after two overs in response to South Africa’s 277–8, when play was halted and subsequently abandoned.

The rest of the tour is in doubt with the threat of stricter quarantine arrangements as Britain and EU countries imposed travel restrictions on Friday in response to the threat of the new coronavirus variant (Nu B.1.1.529).

A joint statement said a decision on the rest of the tour would be taken in 24 to 48 hours.

“Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the Koninklijke Netherlands Cricket Bond (KNCB) are aware of ongoing reports regarding the cancellation or postponement of the Netherlands’ tour of South Africa,” the statement read.

“Both boards can confirm that following the updated information, there is little chance that the visiting team will be able to pull out of South Africa over the weekend.”

Kyle Wren scored five runs short of his first ODI century but helped South Africa recover 24-2 as he shared a 119-run stand with Zubair Hamza, who scored 56.

South Africa’s total was greatly improved by a late cameo from Andile Phehlukwayo, who smashed six sixes in his 22-ball 48.
