Sri Lanka arrests 12 Indian fishermen for allegedly fishing in its waters

Rameshwaram (Tamil Nadu):

12 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing in its waters, a fisheries official said on Sunday.

A boat was also impounded.

The fishermen were engaged in fishing near Katchatheevu late Saturday night when they were caught by the Sri Lankan Navy, the official said.

Ramanathapuram MP K Navas Kani took up the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs.

This is the third instance of the Sri Lankan Navy taking Indian fishermen for alleged maritime boundary violations since March 29. A total of seven fishermen were caught on Tuesday and Thursday. Subsequently, two boats used by the fishermen were also seized.
