A day after angry citizens, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa declared a state of emergency in beleaguered Sri Lanka in front of his house Demanding his immediate resignation.

An extraordinary gazette notification issued late on Friday said the state of emergency came into force with immediate effect, “in the interest of public safety, the protection of public order and the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community”.
