Sri Lanka orders Covid-19 booster shots for frontline workers, tourism industry – Times of India

Colombo: President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa Ordered to give one third to frontline workers and tourism staff on Friday booster shot NS covid-19 vaccine Next month, part of a bid to reopen travel industry and revive the economy.
More than 1 million people, including security personnel, health care workers and tourism industry workers, will be given a third shot pfizer vaccine From 1 November the President’s Office said in a statement.
So far Sri Lanka has fully vaccinated over 60% of its 22 million people. The country depends on international tourism, and is partially rolling back covid-19 restrictions Late last month, fully vaccinated passengers with a negative test were allowed to enter without quarantine.
Tourism revenue declined from $4.3 billion in 2018 to just $33 million in the first eight months of this year. Reviving the industry is seen as key to restoring reserves that stood at just $2.6 billion at the end of September.
Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said there is a lot of interest from travelers from countries like Russia, Britain, France and Germany and international flights will be increased from next month.
“The target is a strong winter season from November to March or April next year,” he told Reuters.
The tourism industry employs an estimated 400,000 people. Some travel limits, including trains between provinces, will be lifted from November 1 as officials focus on reducing death rate from covid-19 to zero.
