Sri Lanka seeks India’s help in policy reforms, governance

New Delhi: Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, trying to recover from its worst economic crisis since independence, has sought India’s help in policy reforms, governance, capacity building, digitization and public service delivery, Ministry of Personnel, Public Affairs of India said a statement issued by Grievances and Pensions.

Indian delegation led by National Center for Good Governance (NCGG) Director General Bharat Lal met Wickremesinghe in the island nation on Saturday and discussed subjects like policy reforms, good governance, digitization, capacity building and training, institution building, and more. Assured to provide public service.

During the meeting, President Wickremesinghe shared his vision for Sri Lanka, a strategy to address recent economic challenges and put the country on a path of higher economic growth.

The discussion focused on policy reforms, good governance, digitization, capacity building and training, institution building and assured public service delivery. He praised the way India has managed its socio-economic development and ensured high economic growth.

During the discussion, the Sri Lankan President urged the NCGG to help establish a governance and public policy university in the country.

During the discussions, Wickremesinghe requested that the NCGG provide necessary assistance to Sri Lanka based on India’s experience in digital governance and participatory policy making to ensure rapid socio-economic development and higher economic growth.

The Indian delegation met several senior Sri Lankan civil servants.

Sri Lanka is keen to learn from India’s policy-driven governance model and the large scale use of digital technology in planning, execution and monitoring of various programs and projects.

“During a series of meetings organized by the Office of the President, top civil servants expressed their appreciation for the continued assistance provided by India to Sri Lanka during the recent unprecedented economic crisis. The DG talked about the Prime Minister’s (Narendra Modi) mantra of ‘neighbourhood first’ and highlighted the special India-Sri Lanka relationship.

NCGG, which was established by the Government of India in 2014 as an autonomous body to focus on good governance, policy reforms, training and capacity building of civil servants of India and other developing countries. Several developing countries in partnership with the Ministry of External Affairs.
