Colombo: Australian former international tom moody is ready to step down as Sri Lanka’s director of cricket, officials said on Monday, t20 world cup,
The 56-year-old’s three-year contract is being terminated by “mutual agreement”, the secretary of Mohan de Silva Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) told AFP.
A senior cricket source said on condition of anonymity that SLC “couldn’t pay its fees in the long run” despite saving more than $40 million.
“We also feel we need a person who is more practical, who can spend more time in Sri Lanka,” the source said.
The source said the former Test player was expected to spend $1,850 a day and 100 days a year in the country facing the worst economic slowdown.
Another source said Moody would be leaving by the end of this month or before the start of the T20 World Cup in Australia next month.
Moody, the former Sri Lankan head coach, was appointed director of cricket in February last year to help prepare the team for the T20 World Cup and the 50-over edition in India in 2023.
There was no immediate comment from the Australian, who said last month that he is taking over as the same director of cricket at the Desert Vipers in the United Arab Emirates-based T20 International League.
Under Moody, Sri Lanka emerged as surprise winners of the Asia Cup earlier this month in what was seen as a tune-up for the World Cup.
As director of cricket, Moody created a performance-based pay structure, which was opposed by the national team.
But eventually they are forced to go into the cave following threats that unless they agree, they will be removed.
According to board officials, Sri Lanka has been facing a severe shortage of food, fuel and medicines since the end of last year, but Sri Lanka cricket remains cash-strapped.
Last week it donated half a million dollars to a cancer hospital that is in dire need of life-saving drugs and medical equipment.
